Dear Praying Friends, I think you would have been surprised to watch us fill 20 large moving boxes with "stuff" from our travel trailer. It is amazing how much you can accumulate even though you have limited storage space. Katie and I have finished packing up the majority of our things. I would estimate that we are nearly 1500 pounds lighter as we travel about the country. Emptying our trailer now allows us to sell it whenever and wherever we are. This satisfies our desire to be ready to sell it when God wants us to. Meanwhile, we are enjoying a fuel economy increase of 1 mpg when towing. We have had meetings in Illinois, Wisconsin, and South Carolina this past month. Last week was refreshing as we participated in a missions conference at Harvest Baptist Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A special blessing from the conference was the opportunity to fellowship with a family from Scotland. We benefited from their insight into Scottish culture and enjoyed hearing them talk about Scotland. In the next couple of weeks, we will be heading to Pennsylvania and then back to Georgia. Perhaps you are wondering about our current level of support. We are still at 73%. We are prayerfully planning on applying for our visas in December. Baptist World Mission has a good policy that a missionary be 100% supported before going to the field. It is our desire that our support will increase significantly enough that our board will give us the green light to go ahead and apply for our visas. Will you pray with us to that end? If we are able to apply in December, we would likely receive our visas by March. I am still researching the questions we have about getting our visas. We need a charitable organization to sponsor us into the country. We will likely need a missionary on the field to establish his church as a charitable organization that can then sponsor us into the country. Please pray that the Lord will guide us in working out the details. Thank you for sticking with us as we travel on toward Scotland. Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore August 2009 Dear Praying Friends, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge" (Psalm 19:1-2). How wonderful it is to listen to God's creation declare His glory. You may not believe that an Iowa farm field has something to say about God, but we found out that it does. This past week our family enjoyed assisting Grace Baptist Church of Chariton, Iowa, with their junior camp. Freedom Bible Camp is beautifully located in central Iowa where it is sheltered between lush farm fields. One evening in particular shouted the glory of God. A spectacular meteor shower kept us entertained as meteors trailed across the sky. A distant thunderstorm with pulsating lightning illuminated the grounds. The moon crept off the horizon and started to rise. All the while, God's creatures were singing their night songs. These combined speeches richly declared the glory of our great God. This past week was one of eternal change in the lives of some campers. Is there a more beautiful sight than that of children sitting with a counselor who is leading them to the Lord? We had the joy of seeing several children pray to accept Jesus after a message on "Lies Satan Tells" by Pastor St. Lawrence. Grace Baptist uses their VBS to encourage attendance at their junior camp. Because of that, many of the 32 children were unsaved and unchurched. One girl's testimony stands out in my mind. She had come with a friend to camp. On Thursday I asked her if she was learning about salvation, and she said that she didn't understand it yet. On Friday she came to me and said that she was one of those who had been saved the night before. She said, "I hope my parents are excited. I am the only one saved in my family." She is nine years old. Please pray for these new believers. Junior camp was a refreshing change from our usual deputation schedule. Kay Lee and Benson braved the 100-foot-plus slip-and-slide down one of the camp hills. Parker and Logan played with 32 willing baby sitters. Katie fellowshipped with the ladies as she assisted in the kitchen. And I had several opportunities to preach to the campers and to help in the extermination of camp pests. In case you are wondering, these were separate opportunities. I've posted an account of the extermination and a picture on our web page, www.missionaryshore.com, under the "sportsman" tab. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoyed doing it. Lately I've been reading The Life and Times of George Whitefield by Philips. Whitefield, the great field preacher from England, often spoke in the open air to crowds numbering in excess of 20,000. His ministry in Scotland was exceptional. I'd like to conclude this letter with a statement from Whitefield on God's enabling power. "By the word power, I mean, all along, nor more, nor no less, than enlargement of heart, and a comfortable frame, given me from above; by which I was enabled to speak with freedom and clearness, and the people were impressed and affected thereby." More of the paragraph containing this definition can be viewed on our home page. This statement reminds me of what Paul said, "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power" (1 Corinthians 2:4). May the Lord help us to do His work with His power. Thank you for upholding our family in prayer. Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore July 2009 Dear Praying Friends, Thank you for your part in my ordination. Your prayers were much appreciated, and your notes of congratulations were a blessing. It was a very special day. As we sang a hymn prior to my going before the ordination council, the Lord showed me His hand on that event. As I sat there, I had thought to look at a note in my Bible written on the day the Lord called me to preach. There I had written, "June 14, 1997, - I surrender my life to full-time service for the Lord. I believe the Lord has called me to preach. Ezekiel 22:30 - by the grace of God, I am going to stand in the gap." What thrilled me was the date, June 14. I was ordained the following day on June 14, 2009. It was just the faith encourager I needed as I went before the council. As I thought this morning about writing our prayer letter, I wished we had a support increase that I could share. I am delighted that the Lord gave us one. At noon I received an e-mail from Pastor Lehn at Westside Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, notifying us that they voted this past Sunday night to add us to their missionary family. With their support, we officially have 73% of our need. Would anyone like to help us up to the 75% marker? If, for some reason, another church beats you to it, we will happily apply your support to the next milestone of 80%. Praise the Lord, we are only 27% away from going to the field! We have had a number of special days this past month. Katie and I celebrated 9 years of marriage. Benson turned 5. And, I hit the redundant age of 33. Parker's 2nd birthday is coming later this week, after which we will be able to relax from all of our celebrating. We are very thankful for God's goodness to our family and have enjoyed these special days. Because of the new visa laws in the UK as of November 2008, I am currently reading up on what it will take to get us into the country. In their words, they have not had such a shake-up in the visa process in the past 45 years. This is largely due to the great number of Islamic immigrants. Some of the changes are as follows: We will have to have a government-registered sponsor to get us into the country. We will need to show a three-month sustained balance of $7,000 in our personal bank account when we apply for our visa. After we apply, it could take up to ten weeks to hear back about our visas. And, our visas could be denied without a refund if we submit incorrect paperwork. Please pray that we will have wisdom when and how to apply. There are other questions we have as we seek to be prepared to go to the field. Questions such as: "How will we find where we will be living?" "How should we ship our belongings?" "Should we buy furniture and ship it or purchase items over there?" Please pray that the Lord will help us answer those questions in His way. Be encouraged, your prayers for us are effectual, and we are reaping the blessing of them. We never suspected what a blessing God's praying army would be. Thank you for fighting beside us in prayer. Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore PS. The picture shows how we are preparing to get our kids to Scotland.
JUNE 2009, Note: After writing the following prayer letter three and a half weeks ago, my computer took an emergency trip to Toshiba. It was not virus related so there is no need for you to fear an infection from this e-mail. It was yet another instance of God's mercy on deputation but a story to tell at another time. Dear Praying Friends, Aren't you glad the mercies of the Lord are new every morning? I was recently encouraged by that thought in my devotions. We may have gone through a lot of God's mercy yesterday (I know I did), and yet we have an abundant supply for today. "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). The following are some short stories of God's mercy to us on deputation:
Mercy for Housing: We began deputation immediately after finishing my duties as assistant pastor in Michigan. We thought we were going to start our travels with only the financial support from a few family and friends. However, our church in Michigan generously voted to support us full salary and benefits for two months after our departure. Additionally, our house in Michigan sold and closed on the pay day following our last church pay check. We benefitted from that sale by about $3,000. Because of the Lord's help and guidance, we had split our property to sell our side yard as a separate lot. It sold about a month later and paid off our first truck and brand new travel trailer. We love our home on wheels. Mercy for Calling: Six months into deputation, I felt like I couldn't call another pastor to seek a meeting because my attitude wasn't right. The Lord graciously changed my heart as I shared my need with Him. The next day I actually enjoyed calling. I have been much encouraged in my calling since then. Mercy for Trusting: For our second survey trip, we were uncertain as to how the finances were going to work out. Money that could have been used to pay for the trip was put to another important use a few months before our departure. A week before we were to leave, we were still uncertain as to where the money was going to come from. I'm not sure how the Lord did it. It wasn't any one significant thing. However, we were able to go on the trip with the ability to get anything we needed and had resources left over. The Lord encouraged us in our faith. Mercy for Finances: A year and a half into deputation, the Lord graciously gave us our fourth child. While excited about Parker's arrival into our family, we didn't know how we were going to pay for his birth. The Lord showed us a Wisconsin state plan for which we were qualified that took care of everything. I could share many other instances of God's mercy on deputation. We have not had a need on deputation that He has not met. No wonder Lamentations goes on to say, "The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him” (Lamentations 2:24-25). As to current events of God's mercy, the Lord provided about 15 meetings last month (April). That is a record month for scheduling, which has freed me to follow the Lord's leading in pursuing my ordination. I will go before an ordination council at 10:00 AM central time on June 13 at my home church and our sending church. I would appreciate your prayers for special wisdom that day. The ordination service is planned for 2:30 PM on June 14, Lord willing. We also want to welcome Bethel Baptist in Schaumburg, Illinois, Calvary Baptist in Superior, Wisconsin and Murrayville Baptist in Murrayville, Georgia, to our financial support team. They have knocked us over the 70% support mark. Praise the Lord! I know the stories I shared are due to God's mercy as well to the prayer warriors behind us. We do not view your ministry as a light thing. I often pray for those who are behind us in prayer that God will enable them in their prayers and bless their prayer life. We need your intercession and thank the Lord for you. Please continue to pray for our ministry and our family. May the Lord encourage you in His mercy today. Ben, for the Shore Clan April 2009 Dear Praying Friends, I was recently encouraged by the following verses: "Be strong and courageous be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah" (2 Chronicles 32:7-8). Doesn't life seem like a battle at times? Isn't it wonderful to rest in the Lord as He fights for us? One of the ways we saw the Lord fight our battles this past month was mechanically. Our truck needed mechanical help at a very "convenient" time. We "happened" to be parked at a church that had a local, Christian mechanic within a block of the church. Randy put 12+ hours of labor into our truck. He also worked overtime so we could get on the road for our next meeting. He didn't charge us for labor and discounted the cost of the parts. The tow-truck driver and Ford dealer who assisted him also did not charge for their services because they had heard we were missionaries. Isn't God good? Please pray that the Lord will bless these individuals for their kindness to us. We didn't see a huge increase in support this past month, but we thank the Lord for an increase of 1%. So, our current level of support is 68%. (Would anyone like to push us over the 70% mark?) Our family is doing very well. We have sent a picture of Katie and the kids with this letter. Katie has entered the coupon craze and is finding great deals as we travel. She shares some of those stories on "Katie and Kid’s Corner" on our webpage. Kay Lee is quickly becoming a young lady who enjoys doing her own hair. Benson is really excited about his new suit. Logan now enjoys playing with an older and a younger brother. Parker is holding his own and often is the one inflicting the injuries on his siblings. I (Benjamin) went bass fishing last week in Illinois. Thank you to Larry for taking me out on his boat. You can see an updated picture on my "sportsmen" page. Thank you for praying for us as we continue in the ministry of deputation. The following are some practical ways in which we would ask you to pray: 1.) That we will have the Holy Spirit's help as we share our testimony week after week 2.) That the kids will not be afraid to go to the nursery or class they need to attend 3.) That we will be good representatives for the Lord Jesus and accomplish His ministry goals We enjoyed working with some children at a large Christian school this past month. I like to share two statements with the children. The first is an acrostic of MISSIONS—"My Involvement Saving Souls In Other NationS." To think that our involvement is missions. Without that involvement, missions, ultimately, ceases to exist. The second is, "I am not too young to help with foreign missions. I can Pay, Pray, Promote, and Prepare to go." God can use these children now to have a great impact in missions. Because of our maturity, God can use us older Christians to have a far greater impact. Let's strive to do something weekly for the cause of Christ in foreign missions! Thank you for getting behind the Shore family and helping us as we seek to go for God to Scotland. We could not have made it this far through our deputation without your prayers and financial support. May the Lord bless each one of you! Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore PS. Thank you for humoring us and participating in our drawing this past month. We enjoyed hearing from all of you. Kay Lee pointed the computer mouse over the list of names and chose Fern Kruse as the winner of the book "A Scottish Christian Heritage." Interestingly, Fern was a missionary to Scotland.
February 2009 Dear Praying Friends, Let me begin by sharing what the Lord recently did for us. He helped us schedule eight meetings in the past 24 hours. Two of those meetings are for the next two Sundays. I'm sure you can appreciate our joy at having ministry opportunities instead of open dates. Thank you for your prayers for meetings. We have a good schedule for the immediate future. You'll rejoice with us that we have received a 6% support increase this month, putting us at 67%! We want to welcome three new churches to our financial support team. They are: 1.) Calvary Baptist, Sauk City, Wisconsin; 2.) Fellowship Baptist, Taylors, South Carolina; and 3.) Tabernacle Baptist, Greenville, South Carolina. This brings our current support team to 32 churches and 10 individuals. You may wonder what is needed to get us to 100% of our support. We need about 20 more churches at $100 a month. That seems like a lot. However, if each month we had two churches vote to support us for that amount, we would be able to go to the field at the end of this year. It is not impossible, and if it was we serve the God of the impossible! Thank you for your prayers for our financial support need. We have enjoyed meeting you on our deputation travels. We realize the longer we travel that some congregations may not remember us or may have people who have never met us. If your church would like to have us in for a follow-up meeting to get reacquainted with our ministry, we would be happy to accommodate that opportunity. Please let us know. Katie and I have enjoyed hearing from many of you as we travel. We thought we would have some fun and encourage that interaction this month. As you know, we now have a website. It is www.missionaryshore.com. If you would like to participate in our "Keeping up with the Shore's motivational drawing," please contact us through our website. You don't have to write anything. Simply put in your name and e-mail address and send away. We will randomly select a winner who will receive a book by Iain Murray entitled, "A Scottish Christian Heritage." This book has numerous quotes of great Scots and is a devotional blessing to the reader. Ben Shore said, "It is the best book I've ever read in preparation for ministry in Scotland." We hope that our webpage will be a blessing to you and will encourage your burden for the Scottish people and our family. I'll conclude with a quote of C. T. Studd's, which is found on our home page: "Nail the colours to the mast! That is the right thing to do, and, therefore, that is what we must do, and do it now. What colours? The colours of Christ, the work He has given us to do — the evangelization of all the unevangelized. Christ wants not nibblers of the possible, but grabbers of the impossible, by faith in the omnipotence, fidelity, and wisdom of the Almighty Saviour Who gave the command. Is there a wall in our path? By our God we will leap over it! Are there lions and scorpions in our way? We will trample them under our feet! Does a mountain bar our progress? Saying, 'Be thou cast into the sea,' we will march on. Soldiers of Jesus! Never surrender! Nail the colours to the mast!" May God help us to "nail the colours to the mast." Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore
January 2009 Dear Praying Friends,
We recently joked about how cold it was as we visited with my family in Northern Wisconsin. Our joke was, "How cold is it? It's sooooo cold we had to put a heater in the freezer." It was more true than funny. It was 59 degrees below freezing at one point (-27), which made temperatures in the teens feel like a heat wave. We had three days in which we never went into positive temperatures. The Lord blessed us with good meetings despite the cold weather and frozen precipitation.
We welcome Great Hope Baptist Church in Virginia to our financial support team. With their help we are now at 61% of our support. Praise the Lord! Will you pray with us that this year will complete our deputation ministry? I've heard, "If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it." This will give us a target at which to aim our prayers.
I recently received the following encouraging e-mail from a pastor in Wisconsin. "I wanted to write you following your time at our church’s missions conference, but some things just didn’t get done. When you were here, you invited the manager of the Dollar General store just down the street from the church. She and her children have been coming somewhat regularly. This morning, her son James (13 years old) trusted in the Lord for salvation at our men’s prayer breakfast! Praise the Lord! I thought you would like to know." You can imagine what a great encouragement it was to hear of the unforeseen impact of a simple invitation given to this lady. A boy, who would have faced God's eternal wrath, now has the eternal hope of Heaven.
Katie had a neat contact this month as well. She posted the following on our web page under her tab, "Katie and Kid's Corner." On this page she is keeping a journal, which she updates regularly as we travel. This entry says, "I decided to do a little 'web-surfing' the other evening in order to learn a little more about Scotland. I came across a lady's personal website who lives in Fife, Scotland. I decided to jot her a note and told her about our plans. I was very curious about her response. I thought I would share it with you: 'Hi Katie, Thank you for your email and I'm glad you're enjoying my website. I am a fellow believer and know that you have a big challenge ahead spiritually with your new ministry. Scotland is a hard country spiritually, and we do need an awakening from the Lord. I know all the people you mention and I love reading Robert Murrey McCheyne's stuff. What a great man of God he was. May I wish you a Blessed New Year and trust the Lord will bless your ministry. In Christ, May.'" We were very surprised and pleased to read her response. It is unusual in Scotland to find people who evidence a true relationship with the Lord and have a burden to see the Lord work in their country.
Our schedule has been developing very nicely. I have a meeting praise list on our web page where I am recording the meetings as the Lord provides them. You can find it under the "Calendar" tab. I greatly appreciate your prayers for meetings and thank the Lord for the meetings He has provided.
I trust that you will sow in hope of a harvest this month. It may be this Sunday that a visitor attends your church because of your invitation. May the Lord help us to be mindful of these opportunities.
Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore December 2008 Dear Praying Friends, Katie and I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. You have been a great encouragement to us as we have gotten to know you on our deputation travels. We couldn't have come this far on deputation without your kind giving and words of support, not to mention your petitions to the Lord on our behalf. We will soon be concluding our third year of deputation! Can you believe it? I can believe it, because we have just celebrated Logan's third birthday. He was ten days old when we began. Deputation has been a great experience for me personally, as well as for our family. Our newest supporting church is Marquette Manor Baptist Church, pushing us to 59%. It is exciting to realize that 15 churches of like support would push us over the top. Keep praying! We'll soon be in Scotland thinking, "We are actually here" and probably "what now?" We have a new resource that we want to tell you about. As of this week, we have entered the realm of web existence. Our website is www.missionaryshore.com. This resource will give us more room to share what the Lord is doing in our lives and ministry. It has our current calendar, prayer requests, pictures, and more. You can find an update on Adalin, Katie's cousin's little girl who has cancer, under the "Pray and Praise" tab. (Please let me know if your church is considering starting a website. I used a program that is very easy to use and the site is free. I'd be happy to send you their information.) Thank you for praying for our need of additional deputation meetings. Lately I have had several pastors contact me to schedule a meeting! We still have gaps in our schedule beginning in February, but things are beginning to fill in. You will find the following quote on our website, but I want to include it here.
"Oh! Christians of England, can you as subjects of divine love, as possessing the blessed Gospel of the Son of God, and as holding His last commission from the Mount of Olives to publish it to the ends of the earth, - can you gaze on these fields of human blood, these regions of unutterable woe, without emotion? Ah! brethren, could you behold the scenes your missionaries witness, you would wake up with a power of pity which would impel you to deeds of compassion, compared with which your past exertions would appear as nothing." - Robert Moffat, 1842
May God stir our hearts to greater evangelism as we enter the new year. Thank you for keeping us in your prayers. Benjamin, Katie, Kay Lee, Benson, Logan, and Parker Shore | |
